Dangerous Drugs - Cardizem

Cardizem, a popular calcium blocker, is also known as Diltiazem, Cartia XT, Dilacor XR, Diltia XT, and Tiazac. It was approved by the FDA in March of 2003. The drug relaxes or widens blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood to throughout the body. It can be used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), angina (chest pain), and to slow irregularly fast heartbeats.

Links between Cardizem and male infertility have arisen after recent studies. The drug appears to greatly inhibit the motility and viability of male sperm. The cholesterol level in the sperm is elevated to the point of decreasing the ability of the sperm to bind to the female egg.

The effects of Cardizem are so potent, it is believed by some doctors it may be used in the future as a male contraceptive. In the current dosage form used to to treat high blood pressure, male infertility has surfaced amongst widespread reports of severe, but reversible, cases of reduced male fertility.
