Dangerous Drugs - Metabolife
Metabolife is an Ephedra (ephedrine) based dietary supplement used to control appetite and facilitate weight loss. Ephedra is the main ingredient in Metabolife and has been linked to serious side effects including death. Ephedra is derived from an Asiatic shrub and contains ephedrine, a stimulant that acts on the central nervous system.
The Justice Department began a criminal investigation into the dangerous nature of Metabolife and other Ephedra based supplements in August of 2002. Within hours of the Justice Department announcing the investigation, Metabolife turned over more than 13,000 complaints it had received regarding the drug since its introduction in 1997. Of the complaints, 80 of them involved death, seizure, heart problems or other major health disorders.
