Unum Provident

UnumProvident is the largest provider of group disability insurance in the country and has unfairly delayed or denied valid long term disability claims.

Handling nearly 40 percent of disability insurance in the US, UnumProvident sells policies through subsidiary companies such as: Unum Life Insurance Company of America, Provident Life and Accident Insurance Company, The Paul Revere Life Insurance Company (Paul Revere Life) and Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company (Colonial), Genex, and Duncanson & Holt. Unum Provident is also the agent handling claims under MetLife (Metropolitan Life), John Hancock, New England Life and Equitable Insurance policies.

In 2004, New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer concluded a historic settlement with UnumProvident, requiring the company to review and reassess 200,000 unfair disability claim denials dating back to 1997.

Multiple suits have been filed against UnumProvident for refusing to pay valid disability claims. These denials were part of a systematic strategy implemented by the company in order to avoid paying claims and were documented by the television program "60 Minutes," among others. The program included interviews with Unum employees who claimed that the company's goal was to close claims and reward adjusters who denied injured people the benefits they paid for. The program also featured a physician who claimed Unum fired him after he refused to cooperate in helping the company deny benefits to injured people. According to a former employee, the company set targets for denying claims:

"At the beginning of each month the projections would come down from the directors who would give a number as to the amount of money we would have to come up with at the end of the month in closures."

The program concludes that Unum's policies have led to nearly 3,000 lawsuits in the past five years.

If you or a loved one has been denied a disability claim by UnumProvident or a different insurance company, call VanDerGinst Law at 1-866-843-7367 or click here for a FREE online case evaluation. The initial consultation is free of charge. If we agree to handle your injury case, we will work on a contingency fee basis, which means we get paid for our services only if, and when, there is a money recovery for you. In many cases a lawsuit must be filed before an applicable expiration date, known as a statute of limitations. So please call right away to ensure that you do not waive your right to possible compensation.
